The Cathedral of El Salvador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada is located in the City of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
The primitive Romanesque church was built, under the invocation of El Salvador and Santa María, to which Alfonso VI donated a piece of land for its construction in 1098.
It was consecrated in 1106 by Bishop Don Pedro Nazar, becoming a Collegiate Church around 1158 and a Cathedral after 1232, since then it has been the seat of the Bishop of Calahorra-La Calzada.
The construction of the current church began in 1158, preserving much of the old one, these works were directed by the master Garçion.
In the 16th century, the right part of the transept was raised to make the tomb of Santo Domingo.
It is built as a pilgrimage church, since it is located on the French way to Santiago de Compostela, with a characteristic ambulatory, behind the main altar, which allows circulation within the cathedral.
