The Chapel of La Magdalena, located in Arzúa, specifically on Rúa Cima do Lugar, is part of a former Augustinian monastery whose primary mission was to provide shelter and assistance to pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago.
Its origins date back to the 14th century, during the time of the Archbishop of Compostela. However, in 1692, in the middle of the 17th century, both the chapel and the monastery ceased their activities, as the community moved to Santiago de Compostela.
Although only the chapel of the former monastery has survived to the present day, fragments of the 16th-century stone altarpiece can still be seen, as well as the modifications made over the years. It was in 1984 that the chapel underwent a complete renovation, and since 2006 it has been repurposed as an exhibition hall.
Inside the building, the tombs of the Lord of Pazo de Brates and Alonso de Muñiz are preserved; the latter was a co-founder of the chapel alongside the friars. These tombs are tangible testimonies to the history and the religious and social importance of the chapel in its time.
In addition to its historical and architectural value, the Chapel of La Magdalena has evolved to adapt to contemporary needs, becoming a cultural space where exhibitions and events are organized, attracting both locals and visitors passing through Arzúa.
