The cathedral's current Obradoiro façade was originally the Romanesque towers. The Epistle side's Bell Tower is named the Bell Tower, while the Gospel side's Carraca Tower is called the Carraca Tower. Both towers are between 75 and 80 meters in height.
Several additions and alterations were performed to the tower in the 15th century, and in 1483, King Louis XI of France gave the tower its two greatest bells.
Buttresses were added between the 16th and 17th centuries after an inclination was discovered in the construction, and the bell tower's Baroque style body was constructed by José de la Pea between 1667 and 1670 under the supervision of Domingo de Andrade. The vertical lines and staggered floor plans of the towers' construction create a striking sense of depth.
