Monte Moserrate

The Cerro de Monserrate, one of the most representative eastern hills of Bogota, rises 3,152 meters above sea level in the eastern mountain range. Along with the Guadalupe Hill, it is considered a protective symbol of the city. Of sedimentary origin, with an age of at least 16 million years and geological formations of the Guadalupe Group of the Cretaceous period, Monserrate was known as the Cerro de Las Nieves until the 17th century. Its basilica of the Señor de Monserrate, an important pilgrimage site since colonial times, stands out as a natural, cultural and gastronomic attraction, accessible via a pedestrian path, cable car or funicular.

In terms of its history, the hill is part of the eastern hills and is a distinctive element of the Bogotá savannah. During colonial times, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded a Spanish settlement near the hill, in the area known today as Pueblo Viejo. In 1620, the Fernández de Valenzuela family promoted the construction of hermitages, and later, Pedro Fernández de Valenzuela erected a chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross of Monserrate. At the end of the 17th century, Pedro Solís de Valenzuela founded a monastery and improved the road to the summit, inspired by the hills of Montserrat in Catalonia. The sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate, completed in 1925 in neo-Gothic style, houses a carving of the Fallen Lord sculpted in the 16th century by Pedro de Lugo y Albarracín. In 1939 the funicular was inaugurated, and during the 1960s the facades were remodeled in neocolonial style.

In the natural environment, the Ecological Corridor Park was created in 1992 to preserve the rural lands of the eastern hills. Although deforestation, fires, and exotic species have seriously affected the fauna and flora, there are still Andean forest ecosystems, small mammals, and 58 species of birds. Monserrate is also an outstanding place to practice sports, thanks to its natural environment and clean air.

Access to the hill can be made by three main methods. The funicular operates at specific times during the week and on weekends. The cable car operates mainly from noon onwards, with variations depending on the day. The pedestrian trail is open to the public every day except Tuesday, with delimited hours for ascent and descent, and was reconditioned in 2017 to improve its safety and accessibility.
