The University of Alcalá, also known as the Complutense or Cisnerian University, was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros in the city of Alcalá de Henares, in what is now the Community of Madrid. It became during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries one of the main centers of academic excellence in the Hispanic world, noted for its humanistic approach and its printing press, where the famous Complutense Polyglot Bible was published. In 1777 it was reorganized as the Royal University of Alcalá, and in 1836 it was transferred to Madrid, where it gave rise to the Central University, today the Complutense University of Madrid. Illustrious figures such as Antonio de Nebrija, Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo, San Ignacio de Loyola and Melchor Gaspar de Jovellanos, among many others, passed through its classrooms.
